Important Information for Curricular Practical Training

Authorization

The CPT authorization is valid only for the employer and dates listed on your I-20. If there are any changes, such as a change of employer, or a change of dates, you must apply for new authorization.

Registration Requirement

You must be registered for an academic internship course during each semester that you wish to participate in CPT. Please note that CPT is required for the Hybrid Executive programs for you to work full-time while you are pursuing your degree.

Documentation for Employer

Your employer will need to see your I-20 with CPT authorization, your passport, most recent I-94, and social security number (or at the very least, social security application) in order to verify work authorization.

Social Security Number#

You will need to take your I-20 with CPT authorization, a job offer letter, your passport, and most recent I-94 in order to apply for a Social Security Number with the Social Security Office.

*This is applicable for students who currently do not have a Social-Security number

Social Security and Medicare Taxes

If you have been in the U.S. for 5 years or less, be certain your employer does not withhold Social Security and Medicare taxes from any pay that you receive. As an F-1 student, you are exempt from such withholding until your 6th year in the country.

CPT and OPT

Curricular Practical Training does not affect your Optional Practical Training (OPT) unless you use 12 months or more of full-time Curricular Practical Training. In that case, OPT is no longer available to you. Part-time (20 hours a week or less) CPT does not affect your OPT in any way.
